Why Is My Heat Pump Electric Bill So High in Massachusetts?
A winter electric bill can rise because the heat pump is doing more heating work, weather is colder, utility rates changed, auxiliary resistance heat is running, or the system/building is underperforming. A high bill by itself does not prove the equipment is broken.

Common reasons heat-pump electricity use increases
Colder weather
As outdoor temperature drops, the home loses heat faster and the heat pump generally runs longer. Comparing January to October is not meaningful without weather context.
Auxiliary resistance heat
Electric backup heat can materially increase consumption. Check whether the thermostat shows AUX or Emergency Heat more often than expected.
Thermostat setbacks
Large scheduled setbacks followed by rapid recovery can increase demand and may trigger backup heat depending on the controls.
Airflow or equipment problems
Dirty filters, blocked airflow, persistent ice, sensor/control faults and refrigeration issues can reduce effective performance and extend runtime.
Building heat loss
Air leakage, insulation gaps, attic conditions and older windows can dominate winter heating demand even when the heat pump is operating normally.
Rate structure
The cents-per-kWh you pay matters. Massachusetts introduced seasonal residential heat-pump rates for eligible customers of major investor-owned electric utilities beginning with the 2025–26 heating season.

Eligible Eversource, National Grid and Unitil residential heat-pump customers received new seasonal heat-pump rate structures beginning November 1, 2025. Municipal-light customers follow their own utility programs, so Hingham or Hull customers should not assume the investor-owned utility rate applies.

How to diagnose a high bill logically
- Compare kWh, not just total dollars.
- Check outdoor temperatures for the billing periods being compared.
- Review thermostat history for AUX/Emergency Heat.
- Check accessible filters and airflow.
- Look for persistent outdoor-unit ice or repeated faults.
- Confirm the utility rate/tariff on the bill.
- If the change is unexplained, request professional performance testing rather than assuming a refrigerant problem.
When the bill points toward a repair problem
Service is more justified when the consumption spike appears with new comfort problems, repeated auxiliary heat, weak airflow, heavy ice, fault codes, unusual noise, or an outdoor unit that is not operating normally.

A High Electric Bill Does Not Automatically Mean the Heat Pump Is Inefficient
Moving from oil, propane or gas to a heat pump shifts more of the home’s heating cost onto the electric bill. The right comparison is total annual heating cost and delivered comfort—not the electric bill in isolation. A sharp increase can still reveal excessive backup heat, a control issue, weatherization problems or equipment that is struggling to meet the load.
Weather matters
Colder weeks increase building heat loss and can reduce heat-pump efficiency compared with mild weather. Compare bills against outdoor conditions, not just the prior month.
Backup heat matters
Electric-resistance auxiliary heat can use significantly more electricity than the heat pump compressor for the same delivered heat. Thermostat history can help reveal excessive backup use.
Old fuel disappeared
If the home previously bought heating oil or propane, part of the “new” electric cost replaces fuel purchases that no longer show up on the utility bill.

Performance Problems That Can Drive Consumption Higher
- Dirty filters or restricted airflow.
- Persistent heavy outdoor-coil icing rather than normal frost/defrost behavior.
- Thermostat settings that repeatedly trigger large recovery demands.
- Electric-resistance backup running far more than intended.
- Duct leakage or uninsulated ducts outside conditioned space.
- Equipment undersized for the design load, or an envelope with very high air leakage.
- Refrigeration, sensor or control faults that reduce heat-pump output.
