A heat pump does not need to blast extremely hot air to heat effectively. In cold weather it may run for long periods while maintaining a steady indoor temperature. Frequent manual thermostat setbacks can sometimes cause larger recovery loads than a steady setpoint.

Outdoor frost followed by defrost

During heating operation, the outdoor coil can collect frost. The system periodically reverses operation to warm the outdoor coil and melt that frost. During defrost, the outdoor fan may stop, steam or water may appear around the outdoor unit, and indoor air may feel temporarily cooler.

Water and ice near the outdoor unit

Defrost water must drain away from the equipment. In freezing weather, some ice around the base can occur. The concern is not a light layer of frost but ice that repeatedly builds into the coil, blocks airflow, interferes with the fan, or prevents drainage.

When Ice on a Heat Pump Is Not Normal

Persistent or heavy ice may indicate a defrost-control problem, outdoor fan issue, airflow restriction, drainage problem, sensor fault, or refrigerant-system issue. Do not chip or pry ice from the outdoor coil because the thin coil fins and refrigerant tubing can be damaged.

Emergency heat is generally a user-selected backup mode intended for situations where the heat-pump portion cannot operate normally. Because resistance heat can use substantially more electricity, unexplained or prolonged backup-heat operation deserves investigation.

For qualifying residential projects installed in 2026, Mass Save currently lists whole-home air-source heat-pump rebates of $2,650 per ton up to $8,500, partial-home rebates of $1,125 per ton up to $8,500, and basic rebates of $250 per ton up to $2,500.   • Keep loose snow from blocking the coil and discharge area while maintaining manufacturer clearances.
