Mass Save residential air-source heat pump rebates
Up to $8,500. Whole-home systems are intended to serve as the sole source of heating and cooling, subject to program requirements.
Up to $8,500. Existing boiler or furnace remains to supplement the heat-pump system. Additional sizing/weatherization bonuses may apply.
Up to $2,500 for eligible scenarios that do not displace fossil fuel or electric-resistance heat.

Key 2026 Mass Save eligibility checkpoints
| Requirement | 2026 status |
|---|---|
| Installation window | Qualifying equipment must be installed January 1–December 31, 2026. |
| Installer | Must be installed by a contractor participating in the Mass Save Heat Pump Installer Network for the listed residential rebates. |
| Equipment | Air-source equipment must meet applicable ENERGY STAR Cold Climate / Mass Save qualified-product requirements. |
| Application deadline | Supporting documentation for 2026 installations must generally be received by February 28, 2027. |
| Utility eligibility | Eligibility depends on the electric/gas sponsor and existing heating fuel; municipal-light customers may follow different programs. |
Hingham and municipal-light customers
Hingham is different from a standard National Grid/Eversource Mass Save electric account. Hingham Municipal Lighting Plant is a municipal electric utility. Do not assume the standard Mass Save electric-sponsor rebate table applies simply because a home is in Massachusetts.
Hingham’s Municipal Light Board agenda in March 2026 specifically included review of HMLP rebates and the cost of developing a heat-pump rate. Because municipal programs can change independently, ContactHVAC will only publish a dollar amount here when it is verified from HMLP’s current rebate materials.
Check Hingham Municipal Lighting Plant directly before contracting for a project. For homeowners in nearby municipal-light territories, the same principle applies: verify the serving utility first.
South Shore utility and program notes
Cohasset
Cohasset Community Electricity is a municipal aggregation supply program; National Grid remains the delivery utility for participating customers. The program advertises additional discounts for low-income customers and customers with heat pumps. Verify the actual delivery utility and current program terms before assuming incentive eligibility.
Scituate
Scituate Community Choice Electricity is a supply program; National Grid or Eversource continues to deliver electricity depending on the account. Delivery utility matters when determining Mass Save sponsorship and available offers.
Hull
Hull Municipal Light Plant operates its own electric utility and advertises heating-and-cooling rebates through its rebate program. Municipal-light customers should use the utility’s current program rather than assuming standard Mass Save electric sponsorship.
Financing and federal-tax note
Mass Save currently advertises 0% HEAT Loan financing up to $25,000 for qualifying improvements, subject to program and lender requirements. The federal residential clean-energy tax landscape changed after 2025; do not rely on an old article or contractor handout that assumes a 2026 federal §25C heat-pump credit.
For project planning, compare the gross installed price first, then subtract only incentives for which the project is actually eligible.

2026 Massachusetts Heat-Pump Incentives at a Glance
The tracker now separates current Mass Save rebate pathways, seasonal electric heat-pump rates, municipal-light-plant exceptions and expired federal guidance so homeowners can see which incentives are actually current.
Mass Save 2026 Air-Source Heat-Pump Rebates
| Pathway | 2026 incentive | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Whole-home | $2,650 per ton, up to $8,500 | Heat pumps become the sole source of heating and cooling under program rules |
| Partial-home | $1,125 per ton, up to $8,500 | Existing boiler/furnace remains to supplement the heat-pump system |
| Basic | $250 per ton, up to $2,500 | Examples include replacing an existing heat pump/AC or conditioning a previously unconditioned space |
| Income-based enhanced | Up to $16,000 or potentially up to no cost through turnkey services | Separate qualification rules apply |
Seasonal Heat-Pump Electric Rates Began November 1, 2025
Massachusetts investor-owned electric utilities Eversource, National Grid and Unitil now offer seasonal heat-pump rates for eligible residential customers who use heat pumps for space heating. The lower winter distribution component applies from November 1 through April 30; May through October returns to the otherwise applicable residential rate.
| Utility | Seasonal base distribution component | Standard comparison shown by Mass.gov |
|---|---|---|
| Eversource | $0.02052/kWh | $0.06264/kWh R-1 base distribution; Eversource also has a seasonal transmission component |
| National Grid | $0.02440/kWh | $0.06677/kWh R-1 base distribution |
| Unitil | $0.03633/kWh | $0.10176/kWh standard comparison |
These are components of the delivery rate, not the customer’s total all-in electric price. Supply and other charges still apply.
Who Gets the Seasonal Rate?
Mass.gov says Eversource, National Grid and Unitil automatically enrolled qualifying customers at locations that received a qualifying heat-pump rebate through Mass Save programs since January 1, 2019. Customers who believe they qualify but were not automatically enrolled can use their utility’s self-enrollment process.
Why Hingham and Other Municipal-Light Customers Need Separate Verification
Municipal light plants are not interchangeable with Eversource, National Grid or Unitil. Hingham, for example, is served by Hingham Municipal Lighting Plant (HMLP). Hingham’s Municipal Light Board was still reviewing rebate programs and the cost of developing a heat-pump rate in 2026, so ContactHVAC does not assign HMLP a Mass Save-style rebate amount without a current HMLP source.
Do Not Count the Old 25C Heat-Pump Credit as a 2026 Incentive
ENERGY STAR states that the federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement air-source heat-pump tax credit applied to products purchased and installed through December 31, 2025. Older articles that still add a 30% / $2,000 federal credit to 2026 project math are outdated.
