Interpretation: A positive difference means the entered heat-pump scenario costs more per year; a negative difference means it costs less. This is an operating-cost comparison, not a project-payback calculator. Installation price, rebates, financing, service life and comfort benefits are separate.

How to get better inputs

  • Use actual annual fuel consumption from delivery records.
  • Use your current effective electric rate from recent bills.
  • For eligible Eversource, National Grid and Unitil heat-pump customers, account for the winter seasonal heat-pump rate where appropriate.
  • Ask installers for an annual energy-use estimate tied to the proposed model and calculated building load.
  • For partial-home systems, include realistic boiler/furnace backup use.

Calculator methodology

Use Your Own Rates—Not a Universal Heat-Pump Savings Claim

The calculator is intentionally input-driven because Massachusetts operating cost changes by utility, supply rate, seasonal delivery rate, existing fuel, heat-pump efficiency, weather and how much backup heat is used. A statewide “you will save X%” claim would be misleading.

Current fuel baseline

Use your actual annual oil gallons, propane gallons, therms or other heating expenditure when possible rather than a generic household average.

Heat-pump electricity

Projected kWh should reflect the home’s heat loss, selected equipment and operating strategy. Whole-home and hybrid projects can have very different electricity use.

Electric rate

Use the marginal all-in cost that applies to additional kWh. Supply and delivery components both matter.

Seasonal heat-pump rates: eligible Eversource, National Grid and Unitil customers have lower winter base-distribution components from November 1 through April 30. Mass.gov cautions that these figures are only part of the total distribution bill, so do not enter the seasonal base-distribution component alone as your all-in electricity rate.

How to Build a Better Heat-Pump Cost Estimate

  1. Start with 12 months of fuel and electric bills where available.
  2. Separate space-heating fuel from domestic hot-water fuel if the same boiler serves both.
  3. Ask the heat-pump contractor for modeled or design-season energy expectations—not just equipment tonnage.
  4. Add expected backup-heat energy if the system is hybrid or uses electric resistance.
  5. Run multiple electricity-price scenarios rather than a single optimistic number.
  6. Compare annual cost before rebates separately from installed project cost after incentives.

Important Costs the Calculator Does Not Pretend to Predict

It does not estimate financing interest, maintenance, future utility escalation, equipment degradation, weather variation, oil-tank removal, electrical upgrades, ductwork or the value of adding central cooling. Those belong in a broader project analysis.
