Heating-fuel economics remain volatile
Massachusetts’ July 13, 2026 fuel-price survey reported an average retail heating-oil price of $4.54 per gallon and propane at $3.60 per gallon, while the 2025–26 seasonal averages were $4.09 and $3.64 respectively. Those numbers can move, so a heat-pump conversion should be evaluated against current utility rates, the building load, backup-fuel use and the home’s envelope—not a static payback claim.

Heat Pumps Need Massachusetts-Specific Sizing
ENERGY STAR’s cold-climate designation requires defined low-temperature performance, but correct equipment selection still depends on the home’s design heat loss.
