Five coastal considerations
- Salt exposure: salt-laden air can accelerate corrosion of coils, cabinets, fasteners and electrical connections.
- Wind: exposed locations can increase wind-driven precipitation and snow drifting around the outdoor unit.
- Defrost drainage: winter defrost water needs a path to drain without creating a recurring ice block under or around the equipment.
- Mounting height: equipment should be positioned with expected snowfall and drifting in mind.
- Service access: don’t solve weather exposure by enclosing the unit so tightly that airflow or service access suffers.
What to ask an installer
- Why was this outdoor-unit location selected?
- How will defrost water drain in freezing weather?
- How is snow accumulation accounted for?
- What corrosion protection does the manufacturer provide or permit?
- What clearances and service access will remain?
- How will line sets and exterior penetrations be protected?

Salt, Wind, Snow and Drainage All Belong in the Siting Plan
Coastal heat pumps face the same basic design requirements as inland systems plus a harsher outdoor environment. Salt exposure, wind-driven precipitation, snow drifting, roof runoff and limited equipment locations can affect reliability and serviceability from Cohasset and Scituate through Marshfield, Duxbury, Plymouth and other exposed communities.
Salt exposure
Coastal air can accelerate corrosion on outdoor metal surfaces and coils. Follow manufacturer maintenance guidance and ask whether the selected equipment has approved coastal/corrosion options.
Snow elevation
The unit should be located/elevated so normal snowfall and drifting do not repeatedly bury the coil or block discharge. The actual stand height should reflect site conditions and manufacturer requirements.
Drainage / refreeze
Defrost water must drain away rather than collecting and refreezing around the base. Roof and gutter runoff should not dump directly onto the equipment.
Coastal Siting Checklist
- Prevailing winter wind and snow-drift patterns.
- Distance from roof edges, downspouts and splash zones.
- Expected snow depth and whether plowing/shoveling can bury the unit.
- Service access on all required sides.
- Line-set protection and exterior penetrations.
- Condensate/defrost drainage path.
- Salt-spray exposure and manufacturer-approved cleaning/maintenance practices.
- Flood-zone or storm-surge considerations where applicable to the property.
Cold-Climate Performance Still Starts With Sizing
Coastal siting does not replace load calculation. ENERGY STAR cold-climate products must meet defined low-temperature criteria, while DOE guidance still recommends sizing to the actual building heat loss. A windy, exposed home can have a very different load from a sheltered home of the same size.

Maintenance Questions for Coastal Homeowners
Ask the installer how frequently the outdoor coil/cabinet should be inspected or rinsed under manufacturer guidance, which cleaners should be avoided, and what signs of corrosion should trigger service. Do not pressure-wash delicate coil fins.
