2026 air-source heat-pump rebate levels

Whole-home$2,650/ton

Up to $8,500. Heat pumps become the sole heating and cooling source, subject to whole-home requirements.

Partial-home$1,125/ton

Up to $8,500. Existing boiler or furnace remains to supplement the heat pump; integrated-control rules can apply.

Basic$250/ton

Up to $2,500 for qualifying scenarios such as replacing an existing heat pump/AC or conditioning a previously unconditioned space.

Enhanced incentives: qualifying income-verified customers may receive air-source heat-pump incentives up to $16,000 or potentially up to no cost through turnkey services.

Eligibility checklist

  1. Confirm your Mass Save sponsor. Standard electric-side offers require Cape Light Compact, Eversource, National Grid or Unitil as the Mass Save electric sponsor; municipal-light customers can follow different programs.
  2. Confirm the existing heating fuel and project type. Whole-home, partial-home and basic rebates have different displacement rules.
  3. Use qualifying cold-climate equipment. Equipment must meet applicable Mass Save/ENERGY STAR Cold Climate requirements.
  4. Use an HPIN contractor. 2026 qualifying installations must be completed by a contractor participating in the Mass Save Heat Pump Installer Network.
  5. Meet the timing. Equipment must be installed January 1–December 31, 2026; supporting documentation is generally due by February 28, 2027.
  6. Check weatherization requirements. Whole-home projects require sufficient weatherization under program rules; enhanced incentives also require recommended weatherization.
  7. Check integrated controls for partial-home systems. If fossil fuel remains serving a heat zone, qualifying integrated controls can be required.
Do not sign a contract based solely on a verbal rebate promise. Verify the serving utility, exact equipment and project configuration before assuming an incentive in your net price.

Partial-home bonuses

Mass Save currently lists a $500 sizing bonus for qualifying partial-home projects sized to meet 90–120% of the total heating load at outdoor design temperature, with a submitted heating-load calculation. A $500 weatherization bonus can also apply when recommended weatherization is completed within the specified program window.

See heat-pump sizing for older Massachusetts homes.

Municipal-light customers

If your electricity comes from a municipal utility such as Hingham Municipal Lighting Plant, Braintree Electric Light Department or Hull Municipal Light Plant, do not assume the standard Mass Save electric rebate table applies. Check the municipal utility’s current program and whether a Mass Save gas-side benefit applies separately.

Use the Massachusetts Heat Pump Incentive Tracker and HMLP vs. Mass Save guide.

Official verification

Always confirm current terms directly through Mass Save’s air-source heat-pump program. Program amounts and rules can change.

2026 eligibility detail

Mass Save Heat-Pump Eligibility Depends on More Than the Equipment

The 2026 rebate amount depends on how the heat pump will be used, the heating system it replaces or supplements, the customer’s participating utility account, qualifying equipment and installer requirements. Homeowners should confirm the pathway before signing a contract that assumes a specific rebate.

Requirement2026 Mass Save detail
EquipmentMust meet ENERGY STAR Cold Climate requirements and appear on the applicable qualified-products pathway
Install dateJanuary 1 through December 31, 2026
InstallerMust participate in the Mass Save Heat Pump Installer Network
Submission deadlineRebate form and supporting documentation due by February 28, 2027
Whole-homeHeat pumps serve as the sole source for heating and cooling under program verification rules
Partial-homeExisting boiler or furnace remains to supplement the heat-pump system
BasicUsed for cases that do not displace fossil-fuel/electric-resistance heat, including some replacement/addition scenarios
2026 listed rebate amounts: whole-home $2,650/ton up to $8,500; partial-home $1,125/ton up to $8,500; basic $250/ton up to $2,500; income-based enhanced incentives up to $16,000 or potentially up to no cost through qualifying turnkey services.

Utility Sponsorship Is a Gatekeeper

Mass Save lists specific electric and gas sponsors for residential heat-pump rebates. Municipal-light customers should not assume the standard Mass Save electric pathway applies. Hingham/HMLP customers, for example, should use the HMLP vs. Mass Save guide and verify directly with HMLP.

Whole-Home vs. Partial-Home: Why the Distinction Matters

A whole-home project is not simply “a lot of heat pumps.” The program requires the heat pumps to be the sole source for heating and cooling under its verification requirements. A partial-home project intentionally keeps an existing boiler or furnace to supplement the new system. That affects controls, sizing, operating strategy and rebate documentation.

2026 Federal Credit Warning

ENERGY STAR states that the federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement air-source heat-pump tax credit applied to products purchased and installed through December 31, 2025. Do not automatically add the old federal credit to a 2026 project budget.
