How to Tell Normal Heat-Pump Air From a Real Heating Problem
Heat pumps do not need to deliver furnace-like supply-air temperatures to heat a house. The more useful test is whether the building is maintaining setpoint, whether airflow is normal and whether the outdoor unit is completing normal defrost cycles without remaining heavily iced.
Normal long run time
Variable-capacity heat pumps may run for long periods at lower output instead of cycling hard on and off. Long runtime by itself is not proof of failure.
Defrost behavior
In cold, damp weather, frost can form on the outdoor coil. The system periodically reverses to warm the outdoor coil; brief cooler indoor air or backup-heat operation can occur during that process.
Low-temperature capacity
